She Pushed the Wrong Woman Into the Pool

CHAPTER 1 - THE SHOVE

"Stay out of my way, intern."

One second she was standing at the edge of the rooftop pool, holding a folder of final acquisition papers. The next, she was falling forward into black water lit by city reflections and white party lights.

The splash turned heads.

Lena broke the surface, gasping. Her gray suit clung to her skin. Her pale blue blouse was transparent at the sleeves.

At the edge of the pool stood the boss’s daughter in a silver gown, arms folded, blond hair perfect, mouth twisted in disgust.

"Go home now," the woman said. "You’re embarrassing yourself."

Lena climbed out one step at a time. Water dripped from her cuffs onto the tile. Her folder floated near the edge before a waiter awkwardly fished it out. Her phone was still dry on the small table beside the pool.

She picked it up.

Then she straightened.

"You're right," Lena said.

The blond woman smiled, certain she had won.

Lena dialed without taking her eyes off the gray-haired man across the terrace. He had just turned from his guests. A crystal glass hung motionless in his hand.

When he recognized her, the color left his face.

Lena spoke clearly into the phone.

"Cancel the deal. I’m not signing."

Silence moved faster than gossip.

The blond woman’s arms dropped. She looked from Lena to her father and back again, finally seeing what everyone else now saw too.

Not an intern.

The woman who had the power to walk away.

As Lena passed her, the daughter reached out, panic replacing contempt.

"Wait—"

Lena kept walking.

Then behind her, the father’s voice cut through the night.

"Lena," he said. "Please. Don’t leave before I tell you what my daughter never knew about her mother."

Lena stopped.
