He Told Their Son His Mother Was Dead

CHAPTER 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE BENCH

"Hey! Let go!"

The shout hit Sophie a second after she had already grabbed the boy's arm.

One moment she was on the bench outside the laundromat, folding two worn sweaters into a grocery bag. The next, a red toy car slipped from a small hand, rolled toward the parking lot exit, and a little boy ran after it.

She moved before she thought.

Her old coat swung open as she lunged, caught his upper arm, and pulled him back hard enough that he stumbled against her knees.

A car shot around the corner.

Brakes screamed.

The front bumper stopped where the boy had bent down.

For half a second, nobody breathed.

Sophie dropped to her knees. "Easy, little duck."

The words came from someplace older than thought. Older than fear.

The boy stared at her. His small face was pale, his lower lip shaking. Then his eyes changed, as if he recognized a song he had not heard in years.

"Mommy?"

Sophie froze.

The father was beside them now, one hand pulling the boy behind him. He was tall, unshaven, carrying a paper bag of detergent under one arm. His face had gone from anger to terror to something worse.

He bent toward the child and spoke softly, like he had said these words before and hated them every time.

"No, buddy. Mommy died."

The little boy did not look away from Sophie.

Neither did the man.

He lifted his eyes to her face. Really looked.

The color drained from him.

"S-Sophie?" he said. "How... how is this possible?"

Tears blurred her sight, but not enough to hide him.

Ben.

Her husband. Or the man who had once been.

She wiped her cheek hard with the back of her hand. The hurt she had carried for years rose so fast it nearly choked her.

"I wrote to you," she said, her voice trembling but clear. "Every week."

Ben stared at her as if the ground had opened under his feet.

Then the laundromat door swung open, and an older woman carrying a basket stopped dead.

The basket slipped from her hands.

"Oh God," she whispered. "You're not supposed to be here."

Sophie knew that voice before she even turned.

It was Elaine. Ben's mother.

And from the way Elaine looked at her, this was no miracle.

It was a secret.
