He Threw Dirty Water at the SUV to Stop His Father
CHAPTER 3 - THE LETTER NOBODY MAILED
Daniel opened the letter with unsteady hands.
The paper was thin. The ink had faded a little. But Laura's voice was alive in every line.
Danny, If you're reading this, then Eli found his courage before I found mine. I didn't leave you for money. I left because your father came to see me after the accident at the mill. He said your family would destroy you if you married a poor girl with a sick mother and no future. He offered to pay my mother's hospital debt if I disappeared. I hated him for asking. I hated myself for agreeing. I was already pregnant. I told myself I would come back when things were calmer, when your anger had cooled, when I could stand in front of you and tell the truth. Then my mother died. Then life got small and expensive. Then years passed. Please don't punish Eli for my cowardice. He has your hands.
Daniel sat down hard in the plastic chair.
For a moment, he looked less like the polished man from the black SUV and more like someone who had been hit in the chest.
"My father," he said. "It was my father."
Eli watched him carefully.
"You believe her now?"
Daniel folded the letter once, then again.
"I believe the parts I was too proud to question."
Nurse Alvarez led them to Laura's room. Machines clicked softly in the dim light. Laura looked thinner than the woman in the photograph, but Daniel knew her at once. The shape of her mouth. The scar near her eyebrow from a kitchen cabinet door twenty years before.
Eli went to her first and touched her hand.
"Mom," he whispered. "I found him."
No response.
Daniel stood at the foot of the bed, unable to move closer.
Nurse Alvarez checked the monitor, then looked at Daniel.
"She has periods of awareness. Not many. If there's anything to say, don't wait."
But before he could step forward, a man in a brown maintenance jacket appeared in the doorway.
Eli stiffened.
It was Mr. Pritchard, the old landlord from the building Laura had once lived in.
He pointed at Daniel.
"You shouldn't be here," he snapped. "That woman wanted no part of him."
Nurse Alvarez frowned. "Visiting hours are restricted. How did you get in here?"
Pritchard ignored her. His eyes stayed on Daniel.
Then Eli said, voice trembling with sudden recognition, "I know you."
He pointed at the man's right hand.
Two fingers were missing.
Eli whispered, "You're the one who used to come for the rent... and Mom was terrified of you."
"Because he wasn't just the landlord," Daniel said. "He worked for my father."
