He Traded a Watch for Lunch, Then Heard His Father’s Name

Chapter 4 - The Family That Profited From His Absence

Michael took Emily to the hospital that afternoon.

She had pneumonia, severe exhaustion, and an untreated infection. The doctor said another few days might have killed her.

Noah stayed beside her bed.

Michael stayed beside Noah.

Margaret was not allowed inside.

By evening, Michael’s attorney arrived with documents from the family archive. Once they knew what to search for, the story became simple.

And ugly.

Margaret had intercepted Emily’s letters.

She had paid an attorney to send falsified separation papers.

She had transferred money through an account in Emily’s name, then told Michael that Emily accepted a payoff.

She even hired someone to tell Emily that Michael had married someone else.

But one detail frightened Michael more than the rest.

There had been regular payments to a man named Arthur Kane.

Emily recognized the name.

“He came to the motel last week.”

Michael looked up.

“What did he want?”

“The watch.”

Noah reached into his coat and pulled it out.

Emily nodded.

“Your father gave Michael that watch when he turned eighteen. I kept it because I thought one day Noah should have something from him.”

Michael stared at the watch.

“Why would Kane want it?”

His attorney examined the back.

Then he found a hidden latch beneath the leather strap.

Inside the case was a tiny folded strip of paper.

An account number.

A safe-deposit box.

Michael’s father had hidden something inside the watch before he died.

The next morning, Michael opened the box.

Inside were original trust documents, letters, and a recorded statement from his father.

The recording changed everything.

“If Margaret attempts to alter the succession,” his father said, “Michael must know the truth. The company is not hers to control. And any child of Michael’s inherits directly, regardless of marriage.”

Michael turned off the recording.

His mother had not just stolen seven years.

She had tried to erase Noah because his existence threatened her control of the family fortune.

When Michael confronted her, Margaret finally stopped pretending.

“I built that company after your father got sick,” she said. “I wasn’t going to watch some girl and her baby take it from me.”

Michael’s expression hardened.

“That baby is my son.”

Margaret’s voice rose.

“You didn’t even know him!”

Michael looked toward the hospital room where Noah sat beside Emily.

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“Because you made sure I couldn’t.”
