At His Funeral, Their Daughter Felt Her Father's Hand Move

CHAPTER 1 - ONE MORE HUG
"Baby, no!"
Elena heard her own voice break across the church before she felt her feet moving.
Cold daylight fell through the high windows in pale bars. White flowers circled the open casket. Daniel lay inside in his gray suit, his face calm in a way that made her angry. No forty-two-year-old man should look that still.
Maya had already climbed up, both small hands gripping the casket edge. Then she folded herself over Daniel's chest as if she could warm him back.
"Just one more hug, Mommy."
The words cut deeper than the funeral hymn ever could.
Elena rushed forward, one hand on Maya's back, the other trying to lift her out. "We have to let him go."
Maya shook her head hard. Tears soaked Daniel's shirt collar. Then the child slid her tiny hand into Daniel's open palm.
Elena looked down without wanting to.
Daniel's wedding ring flashed under the church light. The gold was scratched near the bottom. She knew every mark on it. She had twisted that ring on his finger in the hospital the night before they removed his oxygen and told her there was no brain activity left. She had kissed his hand and whispered the one thing she could not bear to say out loud.
I'm sorry.
Then Daniel's finger moved.
A twitch.
So slight Elena almost told herself grief was making tricks of her eyes.
"Wait..."
She froze.
Maya lifted her head. "Mommy?"
The fingers moved again.
Not random this time.
They curled, slowly, unmistakably, around their daughter's hand.
Elena stumbled back, then lurched forward so hard she hit the side of the casket. A vase of white lilies trembled.
"Call 911!" she shouted, no longer caring who stared. "He's alive. My husband is alive."
And from the last pew, a voice answered before anyone else could move.
"No," said a woman Elena had never seen before. "If he's waking up now, you need to know why they buried him so fast."
