The Waitress Called Off The Deal

Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Lost Everything

Victoria hired an independent forensic accountant the next morning.

Within forty-eight hours, her life collapsed.

The twelve-million-dollar inheritance was almost gone.

Richard had used it as collateral for failing hotel projects.

He forged Victoria's authorization on two loans.

Then he transferred remaining assets into companies controlled personally by him.

He had also purchased an apartment.

Victoria knew nothing about it.

A woman named Melissa King lived there.

Richard had been paying her expenses for almost three years.

Victoria stared at the photographs.

Another woman.

Another life.

Another lie.

But the accountant found something more important.

Richard was preparing to leave.

Once the Moretti deal closed, he planned to use the inflated trademark transaction to extract enough money to escape Hale Hospitality's debt.

The company would collapse.

Victoria would remain personally responsible for several loans because her signature appeared on them.

Richard would walk away with millions.

She would be left with nothing.

Suddenly the restaurant humiliation felt very different.

Victoria had looked at Sofia’s uniform and assumed she was powerless.

Richard had looked at his own wife and made exactly the same mistake.

He assumed she would never understand what he was doing.

Victoria called Sofia.

“I need to see you.”

Sofia nearly refused.

Then Victoria said:

“Please.”

They met at Moretti Vineyards.

Victoria arrived without jewelry.

Without a driver.

Without arrogance.

She placed several documents on Sofia's desk.

“You were right.”

Sofia looked through them.

“About Richard?”

“About everything.”

Victoria swallowed.

“I'm going to lose the company.”

“That depends.”

Victoria looked up.

Sofia explained that Moretti had never signed the acquisition.

Without it, Richard's entire financing structure collapsed.

The banks would investigate.

And once they examined his documents, the forged signatures would surface.

Victoria understood.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“That's why you canceled publicly.”

Sofia nodded.

“I wanted him to know the deal was dead before he could create another document.”

Victoria looked ashamed.

“I threw wine at you.”

“Yes.”

“And you're helping me?”

Sofia's expression hardened.

“I'm not helping you.”

Victoria looked surprised.

“I'm protecting my company.”

She leaned closer.

“What happens to you depends on what you do next.”

Victoria understood.

She could protect Richard.

Or expose him.

For most of her marriage, she had chosen comfort over questions.

This time she chose differently.
