The Girl Who Called Him Daddy
Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Chose Everything
James confronted Margaret that night.
Rachel did not come.
She was not ready.
James placed the old photograph on the table.
Margaret looked at it.
Her face changed.
Then he placed the forged check beside it.
Finally, two photographs.
Sophie.
Ella.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
Same face.
Margaret sat down.
“You found her.”
James's anger became colder.
“You knew.”
Margaret said nothing.
“You knew Rachel had twins.”
Silence.
“You knew Sophie was mine.”
Margaret finally whispered:
“Yes.”
James stared at her.
“Why?”
“She would have ruined you.”
“No.”
“She would have taken control of the trust.”
“She found out you were stealing.”
Margaret's expression changed.
That was enough.
James had spent hours with independent accountants before confronting her.
Rachel was right.
Millions had been moved through shell companies.
Margaret used the money to cover debts created by James's late father.
Then later, she began taking more.
To maintain the family's lifestyle.
To protect the Whitmore name.
At least, that was how she justified it.
Rachel's discovery threatened everything.
“I was protecting this family,” Margaret said.
James stared at her.
“You stole my child.”
“I gave her to you.”
The words were so monstrous that even Margaret seemed to realize it.
James stepped backward.
“You let Rachel think Sophie was dead.”
Margaret began crying.
“I thought she'd eventually build another life.”
“And me?”
“You were falling apart.”
“So you gave me my own daughter and lied about who she was?”
Margaret nodded through tears.
“I thought loving Sophie would save you.”
James could hardly breathe.
Margaret had been right about one thing.
Sophie had saved him.
But that did not make the lie forgivable.
Then James asked:
“Why did you let Rachel keep Ella?”
Margaret looked away.
That hesitation frightened him.
“Mother.”
“One child was enough.”
James's stomach turned.
Margaret had considered taking both.
Rachel survived with Ella only because a nurse intervened and threatened to call police if the second child disappeared.
Margaret backed down.
Then paid the nurse to remain silent.
James stood.
“You're going to tell the police everything.”
Margaret looked at him.
“You would destroy your own mother?”
James shook his head.
“You did that yourself.”
