The Maid Who Touched the Lady's Necklace

CHAPTER 4 - WHAT MARTA HID

The funeral home listed on the receipt had closed decades earlier.

Thomas found the former director's daughter living in a nearby town. Her name was June Mercer, and she remembered Marta.

“She came to us after a car accident,” June said. “Not dead. Terrified.”

Marta had been seventeen when she gave birth to Clara. The accident happened years later, after she had built a quiet life under another surname.

“She asked my father to prepare a burial record,” June continued. “She wanted her family to believe she was gone.”

Clara felt the room tilt.

“Why?”

June looked at Eleanor.

“Because someone had been sending threats. Marta said the Vale family wanted the child back.”

Eleanor stood rigidly. “My father?”

“Your father and his attorney. They believed the baby belonged to the family.”

Clara remembered her mother's hands. Always locked doors. Always checking the street before leaving.

June brought out an old ledger. Beside Marta's name was a note: Necklace placed in temporary custody.

“The necklace was never buried,” June said. “Marta gave it to my father. She said if anything happened to her, it should go to the woman who had once tried to protect her.”

Eleanor looked at Clara.

“But my mother died wearing it,” Clara whispered.

June shook her head gently. “Marta told you that because she wanted you to believe she had nothing left worth stealing.”

The truth came slowly.

Marta had sold the necklace years later to pay for Clara's heart surgery. After Marta died, Eleanor purchased it from an antique dealer, unaware of its history. Marta had left Clara a comforting lie because she could not bear to tell her daughter that her mother's final treasure had been exchanged for her life.

Clara remembered the hospital corridor. Her mother's exhausted smile. The words, “You are worth everything I have.”

Eleanor removed the necklace from her purse.

“I thought this was an old family piece,” she said. “I never knew it had saved you.”

Clara took the pendant but did not wear it.

Then Thomas called.

The Vale Foundation was about to announce a scholarship in their father's name, using the family story that Marta had abandoned them.

If they allowed it, the lie would become permanent.
