The Boy Behind the Prison Glass

Chapter 1 - Behind The Glass
Seven-year-old Noah Carter pressed both hands against the prison glass.
“Mommy!”
The sound echoed through the visiting room.
Across from him, Emily Carter flinched.
She immediately leaned forward and placed her palm against the glass exactly where his small hand rested.
“Baby, don’t cry.”
Noah’s face was wet with tears.
For the past three months, everyone around him had told him the same thing.
His mother had done something terrible.
His grandmother avoided discussing it.
His classmates whispered about it.
Even his father’s old friends stopped visiting.
But Noah did not believe any of them.
Emily had been convicted of stealing nearly two million dollars from the charitable foundation where she worked as financial director.
The evidence appeared overwhelming.
Transfers carried her authorization.
Money had been routed into an account under her maiden name.
Security footage showed her entering the office late at night.
Then her boss, Charles Whitmore, testified that Emily had begged him not to call police.
She received twelve years in prison.
Noah did not understand bank transfers.
He understood his mother.
“Mommy’s innocent,” Emily whispered. “I didn’t do it.”
Noah wiped his face.
“I trust you, Mom.”
Something in his expression changed.
Pain became anger.
“I’ll make them suffer for what they did to you.”
Emily’s eyes widened.
“No! Focus on your future!”
Her voice became firmer.
“Listen to me.”
He stared through the glass.
“You go to school. You grow up. You become kind. You do not let what happened to me decide who you become.”
Noah’s mouth trembled.
Then he lifted his palm again.
“I’ll bring you home, Mother…”
Emily pressed her hand against his.
“…I promise you.”
She turned her face away so he would not see how hard she was crying.
Because there was something Noah did not know.
Emily knew exactly who had framed her.
And that person was now raising him.
