"Daddy, There's Something Under the Table"
CHAPTER 5 - NO MORE HIDING
Daniel pushed the girls into the servants' passage.
Grant lunged for Ruby's phone, but Daniel struck his wrist with a wooden pantry tray. The knife fell across the floor.
Vanessa kicked it beneath a cabinet.
Grant grabbed her shoulder.
Ruby screamed, but Daniel pulled Grant away and forced him against the wall. They struggled until an officer rushed into the pantry and ordered them apart.
Grant ignored the command.
He reached for Daniel again.
The officer brought him to the floor and handcuffed him.
For the first time that night, Ruby let herself cry.
Three months later, Grant was awaiting trial for Claire's death, child abuse, and breaking into Daniel's home. The recording did not stand alone. Investigators found Claire's blood beneath replaced carpeting and uncovered medical records showing injuries she had hidden for years.
Vanessa received temporary guardianship of Ruby.
Daniel did not pretend one apology could repair everything. He postponed their wedding, and Vanessa accepted his decision without argument.
They began family counseling.
Vanessa apologized to Sophie for calling her a liar. She did not say she had only been afraid. She did not ask to be forgiven.
Sophie studied her for a long moment.
Then she said, "Next time, tell Daddy the truth. He's good at fixing things."
Daniel smiled, though his eyes stung.
"Some things can't be fixed, sweetheart, but people can learn how to build something better."
By spring, the dark tablecloth was gone. Sophie refused to eat with anything hiding her legs, so Daniel replaced it with bright woven placemats.
Ruby kept Claire's cracked blue phone in a memory box. It no longer held terror. It held proof that her mother had tried to protect her.
One Saturday, Daniel found Ruby standing in the upstairs guest room with a paint chart.
"Would yellow be all right?" she asked. "For the walls?"
Daniel looked at Vanessa, who waited silently in the doorway.
He handed Ruby a paintbrush.
"Yellow sounds like a beginning."
