The Waitress He Pushed Into the Pool
Chapter 3 - Eleven Missing Minutes
By midnight, Mara had given her statement to the police and gone home with her sister. Arthur arranged paid leave, but made clear that she did not owe him silence in return.
The following morning, an officer called.
The terrace camera had been working.
Its recording was missing eleven minutes.
Arthur had asked the hotel's external security contractor to preserve the system after Peter's remark. Their remote diagnostic logs showed the camera transmitting normally throughout the evening. Someone had exported a shortened incident clip after the fall.
That clip began with Mara already in the water.
Peter claimed he had saved the wrong section by mistake.
Mara read the officer's message twice. Then she called Lena.
“Was Nathan Cole the guest who complained about you?”
Silence.
“Why?” Lena asked.
Mara told her.
Lena had been working a private reception when Nathan grabbed her wrist after she refused to serve a visibly intoxicated guest. She pulled away. A tray fell. Peter dismissed her the next day.
“I sent a complaint to head office,” Lena said. “Nobody answered.”
She still had the email.
Mara forwarded it to Arthur with Lena's permission. He found the original in a case marked resolved. The resolution said the employee had withdrawn her allegation.
Lena had done no such thing.
That afternoon, Peter was suspended while an independent investigator reviewed the records. Arthur also stepped back from the fact-finding. He had witnessed the assault; he could not pretend to be an impartial investigator of everything that followed.
Nathan's lawyer contacted Mara through the representative helping her with the complaint.
The offer was enough to clear her mother's medical debt.
In exchange, she would sign a statement saying she could not be certain Nathan had pushed her.
Mara sat at her kitchen table for a long time.
Her sister read the statement.
“You don't have to decide tonight.”
“I remember his hand.”
“I know.”
“I remember looking for the surface.”
Her sister moved the paper away from the tea they had forgotten to drink.
Mara called her representative the next morning.
“No.”
An hour later, a banquet guest sent the police a video. She had been filming the sunset for her husband. In the foreground, Nathan's arm extended, Mara fell backward, and the towel landed on the stone.
The recording continued through the splash.
There was no missing interval.
