Three Girls, One Stolen Life

Chapter 5 - A Place at the Table

The girls did not become a family because a laboratory printed a result.

Sophie cried the first night Daniel explained that Lucy and Rose were her sisters. She was afraid she would have to give away her bedroom, then ashamed that she had thought about a bedroom when they had so little.

Rose hid food in her coat pocket.

Lucy kept asking when they would have to leave.

Daniel learned to answer the question they were actually asking.

“You're safe tonight,” he told them. “And tomorrow morning, we will still be here.”

Elena moved into a small rented home near the girls' school while she recovered. Daniel paid the children's expenses through an arrangement their lawyers recorded clearly. Help would not come with conditions, and reconciliation would not be its price.

He visited when invited. He collected prescriptions, learned which twin hated peas, and discovered that Sophie and Rose both talked in their sleep.

Lucy watched him longest.

One afternoon, her old bear split along a seam. Daniel offered to buy another.

“I don't want another.”

So he sat beside her with a sewing kit and asked her to show him where it hurt.

His stitches were crooked. She kept them.

The investigation continued. Elena gave statements, supported by Nora and the records their lawyer had recovered. There were still questions about who had signed what, who had been paid, and who had looked away.

Daniel stopped asking Elena when she would forgive him.

Instead, he arrived when he said he would.

Months later, she invited him to stay for dinner.

Three bowls stood on one side of the table. Three girls argued about who would sit in the middle. Their faces matched, but nothing else was quite the same: Sophie's careful manners, Rose's sudden laughter, Lucy's habit of checking everyone had enough before she ate.

Elena watched him notice.

“They aren't copies,” she said.

“I know.”

After dinner, Lucy opened the locket again. Daniel recognized the laughing woman by the lake, but this time he also saw the worn hinge and the small scratches from years of being held.

“Can we put another picture in the other side?” Lucy asked.

“What picture?”

“All of us.”

Elena looked at Daniel for a long moment.

Then she moved her chair closer so they would fit.
