She Kicked the Janitor's Bucket and Lost the Job in Ten Seconds

CHAPTER 1 - THE BUCKET

"Are you blind?! You just ruined my designer heels!"

The words cracked through the marble lobby before anyone could pretend not to hear them.

Vanessa Hale stood in a shallow puddle, one heel skidding sideways. She caught herself on the reception desk, then whipped around in fury. At her feet lay a yellow cleaning bucket, half full, a warning sign beside it.

In one violent motion, she kicked the bucket.

Dirty water splashed across the polished floor and onto the pants of the gray-haired janitor holding the mop. He was thin, stooped a little with age, and dressed in a plain maintenance uniform. Water dripped from his cuff. He simply looked at her.

Vanessa clutched a leather folder stamped RESUME against her chest as if it were proof she belonged there more than he did.

"Here for the interview, miss?" the old man asked calmly. "There was a warning sign right there."

"None of your business, old man. Just clean this mess."

The lobby went strangely still.

Then the executive elevator opened.

A man in a dark three-piece suit hurried out, not toward Vanessa, but toward the janitor. He stopped in front of him with visible respect.

"Mr. Chairman," he said. "Shall I bring her to the conference room?"

Vanessa's face drained of color.

The old man leaned the mop against the wall and dusted his hands together as if he were finished with a small, unpleasant task.

"Y-You're... the Chairman?" she stammered.

He met her eyes without anger, which was somehow worse.

"The interview is over. We don't hire people who cannot show basic respect."

He turned and walked toward the elevator. The assistant followed. Vanessa lunged after them.

"Wait! Please let me explain!"

Her heel slipped again on the water she had scattered. She stopped short, humiliated and shaking, as the doors closed.

At the reception desk, the older woman behind the phone stared at Vanessa with open pity.

Then she said, very quietly, "Miss Hale... he asked for you by name before you arrived."
