She Kicked the Janitor's Bucket and Lost the Job in Ten Seconds

CHAPTER 3 - THE WOMAN WHO LIED FOR LOVE

Vanessa did not cry at first. She got angry.

Not the hot, careless anger from the lobby. This was colder. Sharper.

"You let me grow up thinking Dad was my father."

"He was your father," Diane said softly. "Tom raised you. He loved you."

"That's not what I asked."

Diane pressed both hands around her teacup, though she didn't drink. "Arthur and I were engaged when he got an offer in Chicago. He wanted me to move with him. I was pregnant and terrified. Then Tom came back into my life."

Vanessa knew that name in the familiar way of old grief. Tom Hale. The man who taught her to ride a bike. The man who smelled like sawdust and peppermint. The man she buried at sixteen.

"He knew?" Vanessa asked.

Diane nodded after a pause. "Yes. He knew there was a chance you weren't his. He said it didn't matter."

That hit harder than anything else.

Vanessa sat down.

"Why didn't you tell Arthur?"

"I wrote to him." Diane's voice trembled. "Then Tom got sick. Insurance was a mess. We were barely surviving. Arthur sent one check after another after I said you were his. He wanted to come. I couldn't let him. By then I had built a lie too big to undo."

Vanessa stared at the old photograph again. Suddenly the chairman's face in the lobby made a different kind of sense. Not judgment alone. Recognition.

"He asked me to interview there?"

Diane nodded. "I sent him your resume. I told him you needed a chance."

Vanessa recoiled. "So I didn't earn it."

"You still could have."

The words landed cleanly because they were true.

Vanessa looked at the yellowed photo, then at her own leather folder on the table. One picture held a promise never kept. The other held a future she had nearly kicked across a marble floor.

At last she said, "Does he know the truth now?"

Diane swallowed. "No. I only told him I had something important to explain."

Before Vanessa could answer, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She picked up.

A measured male voice said, "Miss Hale, this is Daniel Reeves from Bennett Industries. Mr. Bennett will not reconsider the interview."

Vanessa shut her eyes.

Then Daniel added, "But he is at St. Mark's tonight. He says if you want answers, come without your resume."
