He Rose From the Wheelchair After She Offered Her Life|

CHAPTER 1 - THE TEST
"Don't touch him!"
Elena Brooks heard her own voice before she understood she had moved.
One second she was standing behind Mr. Adrian Vale's wheelchair, a thin blanket folded over her arm. The next, two men in black burst into the living room, knocked over the small side table, and sent a glass shattering across the marble floor.
One intruder raised his gun toward Adrian.
Elena dropped the blanket and ran in front of him, arms wide, breath shaking.
"Move," the first man said. "It's none of your business."
He shoved her shoulder. Pain shot down her arm. She caught herself on the wheelchair handle, then stepped back in front of Adrian again.
Behind her, his voice came low and urgent.
"Run. Save yourself."
She didn't look back.
If she looked at him, she might break.
"No." Her throat burned. "If someone has to die, take me."
Her hands trembled so hard she hated herself for it, but she stood straighter anyway. Tears slipped down her face.
Then Adrian said, almost like a man hearing something impossible, "You'd die for me?"
Elena pressed a hand back against his sleeve.
"I'm not leaving you."
For one suspended second, everything changed.
His hand moved under hers. Not weakly. Steadily.
Then he stood.
Elena turned so fast her neck hurt. The wheelchair sat empty behind him. Adrian, who had not walked in front of anyone in this house for eleven months, faced the gunmen with a cold, level stare.
"The test is over," he said.
The men lowered their weapons at once.
Elena stared at the empty chair, then at him.
He reached for her, but she flinched back as if his hand were fire.
"How could you..."
Her voice broke.
And before Adrian could answer, the front door opened again.
An older woman stepped into the room, took in the guns, the tears, the wheelchair, and said, "My God, Adrian. You used your mother's men on the only decent person in this house?"
