He Rose From the Wheelchair After She Offered Her Life|

CHAPTER 3 - WHAT LOYALTY COSTS

Elena should have left that night.

Any sensible woman would have.

Instead, she went upstairs to the small room over the kitchen and sat on the edge of her bed until dawn, still wearing the same black dress she'd ironed that morning. Her shoulder ached where the man had shoved her. Her chest ached worse.

At seven, there was a knock.

"Go away," she said.

The door opened anyway.

Adrian stood there without the wheelchair, one hand braced on the frame as if he knew he had no right to come in but had come anyway.

"I dismissed the security team," he said. "The real one. Not those two idiots."

Elena looked at him. "Congratulations."

He accepted that.

Then he placed something on her nightstand: the thin blanket she had dropped in the living room, neatly folded now.

"I kept this," he said, "because I didn't know how to return it without making things worse."

"It would have been difficult," she said. "Since pretending to be helpless takes up so much time."

His mouth almost moved, but not enough for a smile. "I deserved that."

She crossed her arms. "Why me?"

"Because everyone else in this house had a price."

The answer came too fast. Too practiced.

Elena stood. "That's not the whole truth."

He looked at the floor once, then back at her. "No."

So she waited.

"Daniel caused the crash," he said. "He was drunk, angry, and thought I'd cut him out of the family business. I protected him for years. Then he tried to force me off a cliff road."

Elena felt sick.

"I recovered enough to walk after four months," Adrian continued. "But someone on my staff kept feeding him information. My appointments. My medication. Which doors were unlocked."

"And you thought terrorizing everyone would reveal who it was."

"I thought fear would show me who would save themselves."

Elena stepped closer. "Did it?"

Before he could answer, Celia appeared in the doorway holding a file.

"Yes," she said grimly. "It did. We just found out whose payroll records were altered."

She opened the file and looked straight at Elena.

"The changes were made using your employee code."
