"Your Son's Alive," the Boy Cried Outside the Car
CHAPTER 3 - DOCK 14
"If Liam is alive, I won't lose him twice."
Charles did not tell Olivia where he was going.
He told his driver to take her home.
She argued in the back seat, demanded to come, then grew strangely quiet when he refused. By the time the car stopped in front of her building, her face had gone pale and closed off. She stepped out without another word.
Charles kept Evan with him.
It was nearly eleven when they reached Dock 14. The marina had changed in ten years. New gates. New lights. New polished signs for tourists who came on weekends and never saw the city in winter.
But Charles remembered every board and rope. Liam had loved this place as a boy.
He found no one waiting at the dock itself.
Only an old maintenance shed with one yellow bulb over the door.
Inside, a woman stood beside a folding chair. Mid-thirties. Tired eyes. Grocery store name tag still clipped to her sweater.
Evan ran to her.
"Mom."
She looked at Charles and swallowed hard. "Mr. Bennett."
"You know who I am."
"Yes."
"Then tell me where my son is."
Her name was Rosa Martinez. She spoke carefully, as if one wrong word could break the whole night apart. She said Liam had shown up four months earlier behind the diner where she worked. Thin. Sick. Confused sometimes. Carrying no wallet. No phone. No explanation that stayed the same twice.
"He remembered his first name," Rosa said. "Not always his last. Some days he knew it. Some days he didn't."
Charles gripped the silver watch in his coat pocket.
Rosa went on. Liam had refused hospitals at first. He panicked whenever anyone asked for ID. He slept in shelters, then in a room above her cousin's bait shop near the marina.
"I called your daughter after I found a number in his coat lining."
Charles stared at her.
"Olivia came the next morning," Rosa said. "She cried. She said his mind was damaged and seeing you would kill you. She gave me money and said she would arrange proper care."
Evan spoke from the corner. "But she never did."
Rosa nodded, ashamed. "I believed her at first."
"Where is he now?" Charles asked.
Rosa's face changed.
"He collapsed this afternoon. They took him to St. Catherine's under the name John Miller."
Charles was already moving toward the door when Rosa said one more thing.
"Mr. Bennett... he wasn't in an accident ten years ago."
Charles turned.
Rosa lifted her eyes to his.
"He said he jumped."
