"Your Son's Alive," the Boy Cried Outside the Car

CHAPTER 4 - WHAT OLIVIA DIDN'T SAY

"I buried one child and abandoned another without knowing it."

St. Catherine's was quieter than Charles expected.

Too bright. Too clean. Too ordinary for a place holding the ruins of a family.

A nurse led him to a private room at the end of a dim hall. Before she opened the door, Olivia stepped out of a shadow near the vending machines.

She had followed him.

"I needed to tell you myself," she said.

Charles stopped walking.

"For ten years?" he asked.

Her mouth trembled. "Please."

He said nothing.

So she told him.

The car crash on the coast had happened after a fight. Liam had come to her apartment drunk and desperate. He was using pills by then, and gambling, and borrowing from dangerous men. He begged her for money and threatened to ask their father when she refused.

"I told him not to come home," Olivia said, tears filling her eyes. "I told him Dad's heart couldn't take one more scandal. I said he would destroy you."

The next morning, Liam's car was found near the cliffs. A body had never been clearly identified, but there had been blood, his jacket, his wallet, enough for the police to conclude what everyone feared.

"You accepted it," Charles said.

"I was twenty-eight and terrified," she whispered. "And when he came back months ago... he wasn't the Liam we knew. He had a head injury. He forgot things. He was sick. He kept saying the men he owed were still looking for him. I thought if you saw him like that, after ten years, it would finish you."

Charles's hand tightened around the silver watch.

"No," he said. "You thought you could decide whose grief mattered."

Olivia broke then. Not dramatically. Quietly. Like something rotten finally giving way.

"He begged me to let him come home. I rented the room. I sent cash. I told myself I was protecting both of you. Then he stopped taking my calls."

Charles looked at his daughter and saw not a villain, but a woman who had made fear into authority and called it love.

The doctor approached with a chart in hand.

"Mr. Bennett?"

Charles nodded.

"Your son is awake," the doctor said. "But before you go in, you should know something. He remembers the night at the cliffs. He says he didn't jump alone."
