The Suitcase She Begged Him Not to Open

Chapter 3 - A Voice Through the Door

Clara's husband met her at the hospital. After examination and monitoring, she was told she could go home with follow-up instructions. She held his hand while a police officer asked whether she felt able to talk.

She did.

Isabel had hired her three months earlier. At first the work had been ordinary: laundry, guest rooms, polishing the brass along the staircase. When Clara's pregnancy became harder to hide, Isabel began reminding her how easily staff could be replaced.

That morning, Isabel had ordered her to pack the contents of a cupboard into the old suitcase. She stood over Clara while she worked.

“Did you see anything unusual?” the officer asked.

“An envelope fell out of a coat.”

“What happened to it?”

“She took it. But I saw the name before she did.”

Clara gave the officer the name of a private rehabilitation center outside the city.

Vincent recognized it when the detective called. Isabel's brother had once worked there as an administrator.

The center would not discuss a patient with him over the telephone. The detective pursued the lead through the appropriate channels while Vincent waited in a room that seemed suddenly too large.

That evening, his phone rang.

“There is a woman there using another name,” the detective said. “We need you to bring a recent photograph.”

Vincent was already standing.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

He sat down again because his legs would no longer hold him.

At the center, a nurse escorted him to a quiet sitting room. A woman stood by the window, one hand resting on a walking frame.

Her hair was shorter. A pale scar disappeared beneath its edge.

Elena turned when the nurse said her name.

Vincent could not speak.

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said, “They told me you didn't want to come.”

He stopped several feet away.

“Who told you?”

“Isabel.”
