The Suitcase She Begged Him Not to Open
Chapter 4 - The Story Isabel Told
Elena did not remember everything at once.
She remembered finding unexplained payments in the accounts of the charity she ran. She remembered confronting Isabel, who had handled its donations. She remembered an argument in the upstairs corridor and a hand closing around her wrist.
Then the staircase.
After that, there were fragments: a vehicle, bright lights, someone asking her questions she could not answer.
Hospital records later filled some of the gaps. She had been admitted after a serious fall, initially confused and unable to give a reliable history. A woman identifying herself as her sister supplied a different surname and arranged the next stage of her care.
Isabel had not needed to fool everyone forever. She had needed to control the information long enough for two separate stories to become accepted.
At home, Elena had abandoned her husband.
At the center, Elena's husband had abandoned her.
As Elena recovered, she asked to telephone Vincent. Isabel said he had changed his number. She brought papers suggesting the marriage was being dissolved. When Elena asked to leave, Isabel warned that she had no money, no home, and nowhere safe to go while she still needed assistance.
“I believed her at first,” Elena told him. “Then I didn't. But I couldn't work out who to ask.”
A newly appointed social worker had recently started reviewing her circumstances. Isabel had learned of the review that week.
That was why the suitcase had to disappear.
The files inside it contained Elena's notes on the charity accounts, old correspondence, and the documents Isabel had removed from her room. The broken watch and ring had been collected with her belongings after the fall. Isabel had hidden everything, then kept delaying the risk of getting rid of it.
Now she had tried to make Clara carry it to a car.
The police preserved the case and obtained the relevant financial and medical records. Some claims could be checked quickly. Others required interviews, handwriting examination, and tracing money through several accounts.
Vincent wanted to go home and demand a confession.
Elena caught his sleeve.
“Don't make me wait for you again.”
He stayed.
When the police interviewed Isabel, she denied pushing Elena. She admitted concealing information about her whereabouts, then tried to describe it as a misguided attempt to protect her.
The charity records gave that explanation a different shape.
Elena had found payments to a company controlled by Isabel. The week before the fall, she had arranged to meet an independent accountant. That appointment had been canceled from her phone while she lay in hospital.
The same phone had sent Vincent the goodbye message.
