He Called the Hotel Maid Mommy at His Father's Engagement Party

CHAPTER 1 - THE BOY WHO RAN
"Come here, sweetheart."
Vanessa crouched in front of Ethan with both arms open, her pale blue dress spreading around her like water.
Ethan didn't move.
Richard bent beside him and rested a hand on his shoulder. "She's going to be your new mom."
That was when Ethan looked past them.
His whole body changed.
His lips parted. His eyes widened. Then he tore out from under Richard's hand and ran.
People stepped aside with startled little laughs. A woman nearly dropped her champagne. A man in a gray suit turned just in time to avoid being hit by a small shoulder and a child's grief.
At the far service station, Clare had just set down a silver tray.
Black skirt. White blouse. Apron tied too tight because she had lost weight again this year and still hadn't admitted it.
She looked up at the sound of fast shoes slapping marble.
For one impossible second, she thought she was dreaming.
Then Ethan threw himself into her arms.
"Mommy!"
The word broke something open in her chest.
She dropped to her knees and caught him hard, one hand behind his head, the other around his little back. He was warm. Real. Breathing. Crying into her neck.
"My baby," she whispered, shaking. "My baby, my baby."
Across the room, the music seemed to fade.
Vanessa reached Richard's side, her smile gone. "Why is Ethan calling that maid Mommy?"
Richard stared as if the dead had risen in front of him.
He took one step forward.
"Clare?" he said, his voice rough with disbelief. "Is it really you?"
Clare lifted her head, tears burning her eyes. The joy of holding Ethan turned, in an instant, into something jagged and furious.
She pulled the boy closer and looked straight at Richard.
"Why didn't you tell me Ethan was alive?"
And Richard whispered, almost to himself, "Because they told me you left him."
