He Called the Hotel Maid Mommy at His Father's Engagement Party

CHAPTER 5 - WHAT A MOTHER KEEPS

By midnight, the chandeliers downstairs were dimmed, the flowers drooping at the edges, and the engagement party had become a rumor moving through the hotel.

Upstairs, the truth lay in files, signatures, and statements.

The river report confirmed what Clare had said from the beginning: only the nanny's body had been recovered. Ethan had been found alive hours later downstream, hypothermic and injured. Helen had used her influence to move him to a private rehabilitation center under restricted access. She had convinced doctors Clare was too unstable, then told Richard that Clare had chosen to disappear.

There would be charges.

There would be headlines.

There would also be years of pain no court could fully name.

At one in the morning, Ethan sat between Clare and Richard on the small sofa, exhausted and fighting sleep. He had both their hands in his lap, as if he did not trust the world not to take one away.

Clare looked at Richard.

He looked older than he had that afternoon.

"I should have gone to find you myself," he said. "I believed what I was told because I was broken. That's the truth, but it's not an excuse."

Clare held his gaze. "I don't know what we are after this."

"You don't have to know tonight."

That was the first wise thing either of them had said in years.

Vanessa came over in her stocking feet, her heels in one hand. She gave Clare a sad, gentle smile. "For what it's worth, he talked about Ethan's mother like a ghost he still loved."

Clare didn't answer, but something inside her eased.

Not healed.

Eased.

Ethan's head dropped against her shoulder. "Can I go home with Mommy?" he mumbled.

Clare swallowed tears. "If that's what you want."

Richard nodded. "I'll come tomorrow. Not to take him. Just... to help."

She believed him.

As dawn began to gray the hotel windows, Clare carried Ethan through the service corridor, past the station where she had set down her tray, past the life she had been surviving instead of living.

At the back exit, she paused.

Richard stood a few feet away, saying nothing.

Ethan lifted his sleepy head and reached one hand toward him.

So Clare shifted the boy gently, and together, without promises yet, they walked out into the morning.
