He Called the Hotel Maid Mommy at His Father's Engagement Party

CHAPTER 2 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS ERASED

The ballroom did not explode into noise.

It went still in the way rich rooms do when people smell scandal and want every word.

Clare rose slowly, keeping Ethan against her hip though he was almost too big to hold. His fingers dug into her collar.

Richard looked pale. Vanessa looked from one face to the other, confusion sharpening into hurt. "Richard," she said quietly, "what is happening?"

Clare gave a short laugh that held no humor. "I'd love to know."

The banquet manager hurried over, already flustered. "Clare, please. Not here."

"Not here?" she repeated. "My son was buried in my mind three years ago. I think here will do."

Richard flinched.

Vanessa stepped back as if the floor had changed beneath her. "Your son?"

Ethan began crying again, softer now, as if afraid someone might pull him away. Clare pressed her lips to his hair. He still smelled faintly of soap and little-boy sweat. She had spent three years trying to remember that scent.

Richard cleared his throat. "There was an accident on the coastal road. The nanny was driving. The car went into the river. They found-" He stopped.

"They found her body," Clare finished for him. "Not his."

She looked at him in disbelief. "You came to the hospital and told me Ethan was gone. Your mother told me there was nothing left to identify. She said the funeral was private because I was sedated and unstable."

Vanessa's face changed at the mention of his mother.

Richard stared at Clare. "My mother told me you signed papers and disappeared two days later. She said you couldn't live with the memories and didn't want to see me or Ethan's things again."

Clare went cold.

"I never signed anything," she said.

A waiter near the wall quietly crossed himself.

The manager tried again. "Please, all of you, perhaps use the bridal suite-"

Before he finished, an older woman entered the ballroom from the side corridor, elegant in navy silk, silver hair perfect, posture unshaken.

Helen Mercer.

Richard's mother.

Her eyes landed on Clare, then Ethan in her arms, and for the first time in anyone's memory, Helen Mercer looked afraid.

Vanessa turned to her. "Mrs. Mercer," she said, "you knew this woman?"

Helen's gaze did not leave Clare.

She said, very softly, "This should not have happened tonight."
