The Birthmark They Said Died in the Hospital

CHAPTER 1 - THE MARK
"Please, Liam. What's wrong?"
Nathan Hale's voice was low and strained, but the baby only cried harder.
Nathan shifted the baby higher against his white shirt. He was good with contracts, numbers, construction crews, and difficult clients. He was not good at this.
At the side table, Elena Ruiz stopped folding linen napkins. She had worked in the house for three months. Quiet. Capable. Careful never to be noticed more than necessary.
But now she crossed the floor quickly.
"Let me try, sir."
Nathan hesitated only a second before handing Liam over.
Elena held him with the confidence of someone whose body remembered what grief had tried to erase. One hand supported his head. The other moved slowly over his back. She drew him close to her burgundy uniform, white apron pressed soft against his blue sleeper.
The crying broke apart.
Then faded.
Liam gave one last shaky breath and went still, his tiny fist closing around her sleeve.
Nathan stared. "How did you do that?"
Elena looked down, ready to answer.
Then the baby's hand shifted.
His sleeve slipped back.
A pale brown birthmark curved along the inside of his wrist like a half-moon.
Elena froze.
Her fingers trembled as she touched the air above it, not quite daring to make contact. The color drained from her face. Tears filled her eyes so fast it looked like pain.
"My baby had that same mark," she whispered. "They said he didn't make it."
Nathan's gaze dropped to Liam's wrist.
Then slowly lifted to Elena's face.
He knew one thing with terrible certainty.
His wife had told him their surrogate had come from another state and wanted privacy.
But Elena Ruiz had never once left this city.
When the front door opened behind them, Nathan turned and saw his wife stepping inside early, her smile dying the moment she saw Elena holding the baby.
"Why is she touching my son?" Vanessa asked.
