The Birthmark They Said Died in the Hospital
CHAPTER 2 - WHAT VANESSA SAID
Vanessa Hale never raised her voice in public unless she knew it would help her.
Now she crossed the marble floor in sharp heels, her handbag still on her arm, her face controlled but pale beneath careful makeup.
"Give him to me," she said.
Elena held Liam tighter for one heartbeat, then passed him over with shaking hands. The baby stirred, frowned, and then let out a small, confused whimper.
Nathan stepped between them without fully meaning to.
"She recognized a mark on his wrist," he said.
Vanessa's eyes flashed. "Lots of babies have marks."
Elena swallowed. "Not like that."
Nathan looked from one woman to the other. "What exactly are you saying?"
Elena wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand, embarrassed by her own tears. "Six years ago I gave birth at St. Catherine's. I was told my son died within the hour. I never saw him long enough to hold him properly. Just once. But I remember that mark. I remember because I kissed it."
Vanessa gave a short, hard laugh. "This is absurd."
But Nathan noticed something he could not ignore. Vanessa was not angry first.
She was afraid first.
"Liam is four months old," he said quietly. "Your child didn't die six years ago."
Elena looked at him with fresh confusion, as if reality had shifted again under her feet. "Four months?"
Vanessa turned to leave. "This conversation ends now."
Nathan caught her wrist. It was the first time in their ten-year marriage that she seemed startled by his touch.
"No," he said. "It starts now."
Vanessa pulled free. "You wanted a child. I gave you one. Don't ruin that because a maid got emotional."
The word landed like a slap.
Liam began crying again in Vanessa's arms.
Elena took one involuntary step forward, and Liam reached toward her with his open hand.
No one missed it.
Vanessa's control cracked. "I said enough."
Then she made a mistake.
She looked at Elena and said, "You were paid."
The hall went still.
Nathan felt the floor shift beneath him.
"Paid for what?" he asked.
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
But Elena was already staring at her in horror.
"You know me," Elena said. "From the hospital."
