The Birthmark They Said Died in the Hospital

CHAPTER 4 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTO

Nathan confronted Vanessa that night in the library.

No raised voices at first. Just the ticking of the antique clock and Liam sleeping upstairs in the nursery.

He laid the adoption paper on the desk between them.

Vanessa stared at it for three full seconds before pouring herself a drink.

"You went digging," she said.

"You forged consent."

She took a slow sip. "I solved a problem."

Nathan had loved this woman once with the blind force of youth. He had admired her confidence, the way she entered every room as if fear belonged to other people. Now he saw what that confidence could hide.

"We lost three pregnancies," Vanessa said. Her voice remained calm, but her hand around the glass shook. "After the last one, you stopped saying the word baby out loud. You started building nurseries in your mind and then pretending you hadn't."

Pain moved through him, old and familiar.

"That does not explain this."

Her eyes sharpened. "No. But this does. I volunteered at St. Catherine's foundation. I met a doctor who knew a desperate girl with no support and a child she couldn't care for."

Elena stood in the doorway then. Nathan had asked her to wait in the hall, but she had heard enough.

"I wanted him," Elena whispered. "I was poor. Not dead."

Vanessa finally looked at her fully.

For the first time, something like shame entered her face.

"The baby had jaundice," she said. "There was confusion after birth. I was told if I moved quickly, the adoption could be arranged quietly. Then there were... irregularities."

Nathan's stomach dropped. "You knew she had not agreed."

Vanessa did not answer.

Elena stepped closer. "Did you ever hold me while I cried? Did you tell me my son was gone?"

Vanessa's silence was answer enough.

Nathan opened the file again. A photo slipped free, one he had not seen before. It must have been tucked into the back.

It showed Vanessa at the hospital gala years ago.

Beside her stood Teresa Wynn.

And a young resident with a name tag: Dr. Simon Clarke.

At the bottom, Teresa had written in pen: Ask him about Baby Ruiz.

Nathan looked up just as his phone rang.

It was Teresa.

When he answered, her voice was breathless.

"Dr. Clarke is cleaning out his office tonight. If you want the truth, come now. He still has the original intake ledger."
