"Daddy, Her Belly Comes Off"

CHAPTER 3 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTO

Daniel did not sleep.

Ruby finally fell asleep on Angela's couch with her cheek pressed against a throw pillow and one hand still twisted in the hem of his shirt, as if she expected the grown-ups of the world to keep breaking apart if she let go.

At dawn, Daniel sat at Angela's dining table with Lisa's photograph, a cold cup of coffee, and Vanessa's confession moving through his head in pieces.

Elena Morales.

St. Luke's grief group.

Find Elena if she disappears.

Lisa had never mentioned her.

Or maybe she had, and he had not listened closely enough in those terrible months when every conversation was about scans, medications, and time running out.

Vanessa arrived at eight, without the green dress and without the false belly. In jeans and a gray sweater, she looked younger. Smaller too. Tired in a way makeup could not hide.

Daniel let her in because he needed answers more than anger.

"Ruby was right," Vanessa said the moment the door closed. "I wore the prosthetic. I lied. But not about the baby existing."

"Then where is your sister?"

Vanessa shook her head. "I don't know exactly."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I know how that sounds."

"It sounds impossible."

She nodded. "Elena left our aunt's place six months ago. She was terrified. She had just found out she was pregnant."

"Terrified of what?"

Vanessa looked down at her hands. "Her ex. He never hit her. That's the part people don't understand. But he controlled everything. Money, phone, where she went, who she saw. When she left, she wanted no one to know where she was. Not even me, for a while."

Daniel thought of Lisa's note.

"Why would my wife tell me to find her?"

Vanessa reached into her bag again and handed him a sealed envelope, yellowed at the edges.

"I found this among my sister's things after she vanished. It was addressed to Lisa, but never mailed. I didn't open it. I thought... I thought if I brought the baby into the world safely, maybe I'd earn the right to."

Daniel opened it with unsteady hands.

Inside was a letter.

Halfway down the page, one sentence made his breath stop.

If anything happens to me, Daniel may be the only man I trust to protect this child.

Then, from the hallway, Ruby's sleepy voice said, "Daddy, that's the lady from the park."

She was pointing at Elena's face in the photo.
