"Daddy, Her Belly Comes Off"

CHAPTER 4 - THE PARK BENCH PROMISE

Ruby sat at the table in her plaid skirt and cardigan, hair messy from sleep, looking from the photo to her father with complete certainty.

Daniel crouched beside her. "What park, sweetheart?"

"The one with the duck pond." She frowned, thinking hard. "The lady had a blue blanket and a baby. She cried when the baby was crying."

Vanessa grabbed the back of a chair. "When?"

"Last week," Ruby said. "After school. Miss Tina took me and Ava there."

Daniel looked up sharply. Tina was Ruby's after-school sitter, a retired teacher who took three neighborhood kids to the park every Thursday.

Ruby kept going. "I knew her because of the picture now. But I saw her then too. She had a little moon necklace."

Vanessa put a hand over her mouth.

"The necklace was our mother's," she whispered. "Elena never takes it off."

An hour later, Daniel, Vanessa, and Angela were at the duck pond asking questions no one wanted to answer at first. A coffee cart vendor remembered a woman with a newborn and a blue blanket. A groundskeeper said she sometimes sat on the far bench near the church fence.

Finally, the church secretary recognized the photo.

"She came to Father Michael's office," she said. "She asked about the shelter apartments."

The apartment building was behind the church, small and clean, meant for women in crisis. Father Michael met them downstairs. He listened in silence while Vanessa explained and Daniel stood rigid beside her.

Then the priest said, "She asked me not to give her location to anyone."

Vanessa's face collapsed. "I'm her sister."

"And he," she added, touching Daniel's sleeve, "was trusted by a dying friend."

Father Michael studied Daniel for a long moment. "There is one more thing," he said. "Ms. Morales left a note in case someone came with Lisa's name."

He returned with a single folded page.

On it were seven words:

Don't let him sign the birth papers.

Daniel looked up. "Who?"

Before Father Michael could answer, a man's voice came from the stairwell behind them.

"I'd like to know that too."

Vanessa went white.

"Marco."
