"Daddy, Her Belly Comes Off"

CHAPTER 5 - THE BABY WHO BELONGED TO THE TRUTH

Marco was handsome in the way danger sometimes is.

Clean coat. Calm face. No raised voice.

That, Daniel thought, was what made him frightening.

Father Michael stepped between him and the others at once. "You were not invited here."

Marco lifted his hands. "I only want to see my son."

Vanessa's reply came out like a blade. "You lost that right before he was born."

Daniel felt Ruby's presence even though she was safe with Angela in the church office. He thought of her small body flinching when Vanessa raised her hand. He thought of Lisa's note. Of Elena's letter. Of a baby hidden behind lies because truth had not felt safe enough.

"Where is Elena?" Daniel asked.

A voice answered from the top landing.

"Here."

Elena descended slowly, holding a tiny baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

The moon necklace rested against her throat.

She looked thinner than in the old photo, but steady. Not broken. Not anymore.

Marco took one step forward, then stopped when she met his eyes. "You told everyone I was unstable," she said. "You told the hospital I was confused after labor so you'd get on the papers first."

Daniel went still.

That was the whole plan.

Not violence anyone could photograph. Not bruises. Paper. Control. A signature.

Father Michael had already called the shelter's legal advocate, and she arrived within minutes with copies of Elena's prior statements and the temporary protective order she had been too frightened to serve alone.

Marco's calm disappeared then. He argued. Denied. Blamed Vanessa.

No one moved toward him.

No one believed him.

Later, after the police escorted him out, Elena sat in the church garden with the baby asleep in her arms. Vanessa knelt in front of her, crying so hard she could barely speak.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I thought if I pretended long enough, I could hold everything together."

Elena touched her sister's face. "You held on for me."

Daniel stood nearby with Ruby tucked against his side. Ruby looked at the baby, then up at Vanessa.

"Is your belly gone now?" she asked.

For the first time, Vanessa laughed through tears.

"Yes," she said. "And that's a good thing."

"Sometimes the truth sounds rude before it sounds brave."

Weeks later, the shower gifts were delivered to Elena's apartment above the church office. Daniel helped carry them in. Ruby brought the small frosted cake topper she had saved from that ruined evening and placed it beside the crib.

Vanessa stayed too.

Not as Daniel's fiancée. That part was over.

But as Ruby's piano teacher on Thursdays, and Elena's sister every day she was allowed to try again.

As Daniel left, he noticed a new note taped near Elena's door in careful handwriting.

For emergencies, call Daniel.

This time, there was no need to hide who it was for.
