She Woke Up at Her Own Funeral and Grabbed His Hand
Chapter 4 - The Father Who Needed Two Deaths
The police created a plan.
Anna remained publicly weak and confused.
Daniel believed the drugs had damaged her memory.
He brought Ellie to visit every afternoon, never leaving the child alone with Anna long enough for a private conversation.
Anna smiled.
She pretended.
She let him believe she was afraid.
Meanwhile, investigators followed the money.
The physician who signed Anna's death certificate was arrested first.
Dr. Raymond Cole lasted six hours before confessing.
Daniel had paid him to administer a drug combination that could mimic death in an improperly monitored patient.
The funeral director had also been bribed to avoid embalming.
That detail made Anna shake.
They had not skipped embalming out of compassion.
Daniel needed her body intact long enough to retrieve the ring.
Then he planned to have the coffin sealed and buried.
But investigators still needed proof that Daniel intended to harm Ellie.
Anna decided to give them the opportunity.
Two days later, she was discharged.
Daniel insisted she recover at home.
That night, hidden police microphones recorded everything.
Anna waited until Ellie was asleep.
Then she placed the wedding ring on the kitchen counter.
Daniel saw it.
His expression changed.
"Where did you get that?"
"It was on my hand."
"I mean the card."
Anna said nothing.
Daniel stepped closer.
"You opened it?"
"Yes."
For the first time, he stopped pretending.
"You should have stayed dead."
Anna's stomach turned.
"You were going to kill Ellie too."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"No."
Anna stared at him.
He continued:
"Not immediately."
The words were almost worse.
"Once the trust transferred, accidents happen."
Anna's hands began to shake.
Daniel moved toward her.
"You always made everything difficult."
Anna backed away.
"She's your daughter."
"She's leverage."
A small voice came from the doorway.
"Daddy?"
Daniel turned.
Ellie stood there in pajamas.
Her face had gone white.
Daniel froze.
Anna's heart stopped.
Then the front door burst open.
Police flooded the room.
Daniel tried to run.
He never made it past the kitchen.
Ellie screamed as officers forced him to the floor.
Anna ran to her daughter and covered her ears.
But she could not erase what Ellie had already heard.
She's leverage.
Some sentences cannot be unheard.
