His Black Card Failed the Moment His Wife Stepped Forward
Chapter 4 - Seventeen Dollars
Daniel spent the next forty-eight hours discovering exactly what being penniless felt like.
His company phone stopped working.
His corporate apartment access was canceled.
The Mercedes disappeared from the hotel valet because the vehicle belonged to Carter Holdings.
His personal savings account contained $17.43.
Daniel had never saved much under his own name.
Why would he?
He believed he would leave the marriage with millions.
He called Claire twenty-three times.
She never answered.
Then he called friends.
Some ignored him.
Others suddenly remembered they had meetings.
Daniel went to the private club.
His membership had been attached to Claire's family account.
Canceled.
He tried checking into a luxury hotel.
Card declined.
For the first time in years, Daniel stood at a front desk calculating whether he could afford a basic room.
He couldn't.
Eventually Olivia answered his call.
"Please."
She almost hung up.
"I need somewhere to stay."
"You told me you owned three houses."
"Olivia—"
"You told me Claire would be broke when this was over."
Daniel closed his eyes.
He had told her exactly that.
He had pictured Claire standing outside the mansion after he transferred everything.
He imagined her begging.
He imagined himself driving away with Olivia while Claire realized she had lost.
Instead, he was standing outside a motel with seventeen dollars.
"Are you carrying my baby or not?" he snapped.
Silence.
Then Olivia answered:
"Don't ever use our baby to threaten me."
The call ended.
Daniel sank onto the curb.
For the first time, there was nobody left to blame.
Meanwhile, Claire sat inside the mansion reviewing the evidence with her attorney.
Her friend Rebecca looked at the boxes surrounding them.
"You knew for four months."
Claire nodded.
"And you still slept beside him?"
"Sometimes."
"How?"
Claire was quiet for a moment.
"Because every morning he thought he was getting closer to stealing my life."
She closed a file.
"And every morning I knew he was getting closer to losing his."
Rebecca stared at her.
"That's cold."
Claire looked toward the wedding photograph still hanging on the wall.
"No."
Her voice softened.
"Cold would have been destroying him without giving him the chance to stop."
She had waited.
Every forged signature was another chance.
Every transfer.
Every lie.
Every night Daniel came home and kissed her forehead after seeing Olivia.
He could have stopped at any moment.
He never did.
So Claire eventually stopped protecting him from himself.
