He Smashed the SUV Window and Handed Him a Family Photo

CHAPTER 2 - THE WOMAN AT THE CURB

She looked older than the woman in the photo.

Thinner too.

Her dark hair was cut shorter, and her face had the worn, careful look of someone who had spent years bracing for bad news. She stood beside a dented stroller cart filled with grocery bags, one hand gripping the handle as if it were keeping her upright.

The man took a step back.

"No."

It came out like a prayer and a wound at the same time.

The woman froze when she saw his face clearly. For a second, she seemed unable to breathe. Then she pulled herself together and held out her hand to the boy.

"Eli. Come here."

Eli didn't move.

"You told me he ruined everything," Eli said, his voice shaking. "I wanted him to look at you."

The man looked from the child to the woman. Then back again.

His eyes stopped on Eli's face.

The eyes were hers.

The shape of the mouth was not.

"What is this?" he asked.

The woman's mouth tightened. "Not here."

A curtain shifted in a nearby house. A dog barked behind a fence. The whole street seemed to lean in.

The man glanced at his shattered window as if he had forgotten it existed. "My name is Daniel," he said to Eli, though the boy clearly knew. "If your mother is..." He couldn't finish. "Please. Let me help."

"We don't need your help," the woman said.

But she swayed when she said it.

Daniel moved on instinct, catching her elbow before she fell. She flinched from his touch, but she was too weak to pull away.

Eli's anger broke into fear. "Mom?"

Daniel looked at her, really looked now. The yellow tint beneath her skin. The hollowness under her cheekbones. The strain in every breath.

"What happened to you?"

She kept her eyes away from his.

"I have liver failure," she said. "And before you ask, no, I didn't come back for money."

Daniel stared at her.

Then Eli reached into the cart, pulled out a folded hospital paper, and shoved it into Daniel's hand.

At the top, under emergency contact, was one name.

Daniel Mercer.
