He Smashed the SUV Window and Handed Him a Family Photo

CHAPTER 3 - THINGS THE DEAD DON'T TELL

Daniel drove them to the hospital in the same damaged SUV.

Eli sat in the back, still holding the old photograph. He watched Daniel in the mirror with open suspicion. Mara sat in the passenger seat, turned slightly toward the window as if she could leave through it if she had to.

The silence lasted until they reached the parking garage.

Inside the harsh white light of the liver unit, truth came in pieces.

Five years earlier, Mara had been in a highway crash during a winter storm. She had been driving home after a fight with Daniel. The car went off the road, rolled into a ravine, and caught fire. Another woman had been found inside.

Burned beyond recognition.

Daniel had identified Mara by her ring and the remains of her coat.

"I was told there was nothing left to question," he said.

Mara gave a tired laugh with no humor in it. "There was one thing to question. Me."

She had survived by crawling from the car before it burned. A passing truck driver found her half-conscious. She had a head injury. Weeks of confusion followed. By the time her memory cleared, she learned the dead woman had been listed as her.

"And you didn't call me?" Daniel asked.

Her face hardened. "I tried."

She told him about the woman who had answered his phone at the rehab center. A woman who said Daniel had moved on. That he didn't want contact. That it would destroy his career if the accident turned into scandal because Mara had left after a violent argument.

Daniel went still.

"What woman?"

Mara looked at him then, finally.

"Your sister, Claire."

Eli looked between them. "The one who sends the Christmas cards with no return address?"

Daniel turned to him sharply. "You've had cards from Claire?"

Mara nodded once. "Every year. No money. No message. Just enough to prove she knew we were alive."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

He had trusted Claire with everything after the funeral. The paperwork. The insurance. The sale of the old house. His grief.

Now another memory surfaced. Claire insisting he not visit the long-term rehab facility because "seeing survivors would only make things worse."

A nurse stepped in with Mara's chart.

"We need a transplant consult," she said. "Her blood type is rare."

Daniel looked at the page.

Then he looked at Eli.

The chart listed the boy's full name.

Eli Santos.

Not Mercer.

"Your sister, Claire."
