He Smashed the SUV Window and Handed Him a Family Photo

CHAPTER 4 - THE TEST

Claire arrived before sunset.

Daniel had called her from the hospital hallway and said only six words: "Come now. Mara is alive."

She came in breathless, elegant, and furious at first. Then she saw Mara in the bed and lost all color.

Eli moved closer to his mother's side.

Claire recovered fast. "Daniel, whatever this is, you need to think clearly."

"I am," he said.

Mara didn't waste strength on politeness. "Tell him."

Claire's eyes flashed. "You disappeared."

"You kept me gone."

Daniel stepped between them. "Enough. Start at the beginning."

Claire looked from his face to Mara's and seemed to understand there was no path left except the truth.

Five years ago, before the crash, Mara had come to Claire in private. She was pregnant again. Daniel didn't know yet. They had been fighting for months after the death of their infant daughter, Rose, the baby from the photograph. Grief had hollowed their marriage and sharpened every word.

Mara had panicked.

She confessed she wasn't sure whether the new baby was Daniel's.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The room felt smaller.

Claire went on. After the crash, when she realized Mara was alive in rehab, she made a terrible choice. She told herself she was protecting her brother from another betrayal while he was barely surviving the first loss. She told Mara to stay away. She intercepted calls. She forged a final legal notice. She sold Daniel the story that the past needed to stay buried.

Mara's voice cracked. "By the time I was strong enough to fight, I had Eli. No money. No lawyer. No proof you'd believe me."

Daniel looked at Eli.

The boy clutched the old photograph tighter. Not as evidence now. As inheritance.

"I don't care whose blood he has," Daniel said quietly. "He's your son. That's enough for me to care."

The transplant doctor entered with a file.

"We rushed family matching because of the decline in her numbers," she said. "Mr. Mercer, you're not a match."

Daniel absorbed the blow without moving.

Then the doctor looked at Eli.

"But your son is."

The room went silent for a different reason.

Claire whispered, "Then he is Daniel's."

Mara began to cry.

"I don't care whose blood he has."
