The Girl Behind the Hidden Door Called Him Daddy

CHAPTER 1 - THE DOOR IN THE HALL
"Lily? What are you doing?"
Mark Bennett heard his own voice turn strange before he even knew why.
It was close to ten. The house was quiet except for the soft tap of Lily's little shoes on the dark wood floor. She still wore her pink cardigan over her flowered dress, and she carried a plate with a sandwich cut into neat triangles.
She stopped beside the low door built into the cream wall paneling.
Not the kitchen.
Not the den.
There.
Mark frowned and stepped closer. Behind him, Vanessa came down the hall in her ivory blouse, one hand still holding her phone.
Lily set the plate carefully on the floor and pushed it toward the narrow gap under the hidden panel as if she had done it many times before.
Then she looked up at him with complete calm.
"She gets hungry at night."
For one second, Mark thought he had misheard her.
Vanessa froze behind them.
Mark crouched at once. He pressed his ear to the little door. A faint rustle came from inside. His stomach dropped.
He pulled the panel open.
Hall light spilled into a cramped storage space packed with old blankets, empty snack wrappers, and dust-coated boxes. In the far corner, a child curled in on herself and lifted her head.
A little girl.
About Lily's age.
Long tangled hair partly hid her face. Her dress was stained. Her eyes were wide and watchful.
Mark's pulse kicked hard. He dropped to one knee and held out his hand, palm open.
"Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you."
Lily stood beside him. Vanessa's hand landed on Lily's shoulder, but Mark noticed how hard her fingers pressed.
The hidden girl crawled slowly toward the light. One hand reached the threshold. Then she looked up fully at Mark.
Everything in his body went still.
She had Lily's eyes.
His mother's chin.
And when she spoke, her voice was dry and thin.
"Daddy?"
Mark's hand jerked in the air.
He stared at her, then back at Lily, then at Vanessa.
His throat tightened.
"What did you call me?"
Before the girl could answer, Vanessa said, too quickly, "Mark, close that door. Right now."
