The Girl Behind the Hidden Door Called Him Daddy

CHAPTER 5 - TWO GIRLS AT THE WINDOW

Mark did not panic. Maybe that was what fatherhood had taught him best.

He motioned Teresa to take Lily upstairs. Dr. Harris moved Rose behind him. Vanessa reached for the landline and called 911 with a steadier voice than Mark expected.

The porch light was on. Through the front window, Mark saw a man at the gate in a work jacket, thin and restless, looking less like a mastermind than a desperate animal.

Police arrived within minutes.

The man was taken in without a fight. Later they would learn he had no legal claim to Rose at all. He wanted money, not a child. Elena had run from him years before for good reason.

The DNA results came three days later.

Mark opened them with Vanessa beside him, their hands not touching.

Lily was his biological daughter.

Rose was not.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Teresa began to cry first. "Then why did Elena say-"

Mark saw it clearly then. Not deceit. Hope. A dying mother trying to place her child with the one man she believed might protect her.

Rose stood in the doorway, small and scared. She must have seen enough on their faces.

"So I'm nobody's?" she asked.

Mark crossed the room at once and knelt in front of her.

"No child who is loved is nobody's."

She looked at him with those grave, searching eyes.

He took a breath. "I am not the father you were born from. But if you want, I can still be your daddy in the ways that matter."

Rose threw herself into his arms so suddenly he nearly lost balance.

Behind them, Vanessa began to sob. Not with relief. With shame. With gratitude. With the terrible release of truth.

Months later, the lawsuit against the hospital was public. Not for money alone, but for every family denied the truth. Vanessa volunteered with a shelter for women and children. Mark and Vanessa did not save their marriage quickly or easily, but they stopped lying, which was the first honest thing they had done in years.

Lily still left half her sandwich on a plate sometimes.

Only now she carried it to the back porch steps, where Rose liked to sit in the evening light.

One night Rose looked up at Mark, smiled, and said, "You listened."

This time, he answered without hesitation.

"I should have sooner."

And from the kitchen window, Lily waved them both inside for dinner.
