The Girl Behind the Hidden Door Called Him Daddy

CHAPTER 4 - WHAT THE ENVELOPE PROVED

Elena's sister, Teresa, laid the envelope on the dining table as carefully as if it were made of glass.

Inside were copies.

Photographs of two newborns with hospital bands.

A handwritten statement signed by Elena.

And one page that made Mark's hands shake: an internal incident report never given to the parents.

The bands had been mixed for forty-three minutes after a sedated nurse mislabeled bassinets during a code in the maternity ward. The babies had later been "returned to presumed correct placement," but no DNA test was ordered. No disclosure was made. The hospital had chosen risk management over truth.

Vanessa sat down hard.

"I never saw this," she whispered.

Teresa nodded. "Elena tried to bring it forward. She was threatened with losing her license. She kept copies. Before she died, she told me Rose had your eyes. She said if anything happened, I should bring the papers to Mark Bennett."

Mark looked at Lily's school picture on the refrigerator, then at Rose wrapped in his old jacket. For years he had ignored a private ache he could never explain. Lily had always been his daughter in every way that mattered, but some buried part of him had remembered that one unfinished conversation in the hospital corridor.

Dr. Harris cleared his throat. "You need DNA testing. Tonight if possible. And you need to contact the police about the ex-husband."

Rose stiffened at the word husband.

Vanessa went to her at once, kneeling. "He won't take you. I promise."

Rose searched her face. "You hid me in the little room."

Vanessa closed her eyes. "I know. And I will regret that for the rest of my life. I thought I was buying time. I was wrong."

Mark watched his wife then, really watched her. Not a villain. A frightened woman who had made a terrible choice under pressure and secrecy.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice came low and rough. "You have something that belongs to me."

Mark's blood ran cold.

The caller named his address.

Then said, "I'm outside."
