The Girl Behind the Hidden Door Called Him Daddy
CHAPTER 3 - THE NAME HE THOUGHT WAS BURIED
Mark sat at the kitchen table with Rose wrapped in a quilt and a cup of warm milk in front of her. He had called his family doctor, not the police, and the doctor was on the way. Rose looked exhausted, underfed, and too used to silence.
Vanessa stood at the far end of the room, both hands braced on the counter.
"Start talking," Mark said.
She did.
Seven years earlier, after a difficult delivery, Mark had nearly lost both Vanessa and Lily. Elena Marquez, a night nurse from San Antonio, had cared for the baby in the nursery. Near dawn, Elena had come to Mark privately and said there had been a mistake with two newborn girls. She had been shaking when she said it. Another nurse had sent her away before she could explain.
By afternoon, Elena was gone.
Mark had searched for answers then, but hospital administrators closed ranks. Vanessa had begged him to stop. She said grief and stress were making him chase ghosts.
"I wasn't stopping you to protect myself," Vanessa said now, voice breaking. "I was protecting Lily."
Mark's jaw tightened. "By hiding a child in my house?"
"No. By hiding her from Elena's husband."
That stunned him enough to silence him.
Vanessa told him Elena had found her two months ago. Dying of cancer. Terrified. She confessed that the babies had indeed been switched for several hours by a nurse covering a medication error. Elena had corrected it before sunrise, but she had made one catastrophic choice before that: she had taken a picture of each baby's ankle tag because she feared the truth would be buried.
After Elena died, her violent ex-husband went looking for "the rich family who owed her." He believed one of the girls was his leverage.
"So you hid Rose here?" Mark said.
Vanessa nodded, crying now. "Only until I could reach Elena's sister in New Mexico. I was trying to keep both girls safe."
Rose, who had been silent, looked up at Mark.
"My mama said if I got scared, I should find the man with the watch."
Mark looked at his wrist.
He was still wearing the silver watch Elena had once picked up from the hospital floor and handed back to him on the night Lily was born.
Then Rose added softly, "Mama said you would listen."
At that moment, the doorbell rang.
Dr. Harris was not alone.
A gray-haired woman stood beside him, clutching a worn envelope.
"I am Elena's sister," she said. "And that envelope contains the truth your hospital buried."
